5 myths about working in the cloud

If you’re a translation professional working day-to-day on your desktop CAT tool, I am sure you have begun to notice more of your favorite translation productivity tools offering an online option. But how do you know if working in the cloud is the right option for you and your business?

We’ve recently developed our own cloud translation offerings that are seamlessly integrated with Trados Studio - Trados Live Essential and Trados Live Team. Both provide an extension of your desktop capabilities in the cloud and will help you to become a more agile and successful translator.

To separate fact from fiction, we’ve decided to debunk a few common misconceptions about working in the cloud:

1. I have to dedicate a lot of time to learn all the new features to work in the cloud.

The core cloud functionality is replicated in Trados Studio as much as possible, so that you can transition between the two environments effortlessly. There are some new intuitive features, including translation engines, but a majority of the features available in Trados Live Essential and Trados Live Team are accessible in Trados Studio.

Prefer working on your desktop? You can continue to work in Trados Studio like you always have done, and still leverage all the benefits of working in the cloud.

2. Working in the cloud is simply an online version of Trados Studio.

Our cloud platform offers all the core translation productivity features that you are familiar with in Trados Studio, and so much more. By combining the power of the cloud with your familiar CAT tool, you’ll have the best of both worlds, including:
  • Trados Live Essential and Trados Live Team offer a contemporary user interface with modern project management interface features, such as the inbox that provides a Kanban task view, that help focus attention where it’s needed most.
  • Benefit from a new concept called translation engines - these have been designed to group your resources together (including translation memories, termbases and any machine translation providers) to speed up project creation.
  • The online editor offers some features that are not available in Trados Studio, such as the ability to switch your translation segments to appear horizontally rather than vertically, and additional previews.

3. I don’t need cloud translation technology since I already have a cloud repository where I save my projects and resources.

Unlike other cloud repositories, ours is built for translators. Where you save your cloud projects is a personal preference, but there are many benefits, including:
  • Being able to work from anywhere at any time, and translating in the online editor.
  • Ability to use the mobile phone app to manage your translation projects from wherever you are.
  • Use of translation engines to speed up project creation.
  • Limited access to projects and resources to ensure consistency
  • Increased data security with a ‘security first’ approach in place.

4. My projects and translation resources are more secure on my desktop than in the cloud.

You’ve worked hard to develop your translation resources, and by not having them backed up on any cloud device, means you’re vulnerable to losing your data. In Trados Live Essential or Trados Live Team, you can save your translation resources in the cloud and have peace of mind that they are secure. Directly from Trados Studio 2021 Service Release 2, there are easy-to-use wizards that allow you to save local projects and batch upload your file-based translation memories to the cloud. Once in the cloud you can then either continue working from your desktop or in the browser and when you save and close the file in either location, it seamlessly updates.
