We’re excited to introduce the new In-Layout editing mode in the online editor – a powerful enhancement now available in Trados Team, Accelerate, and Enterprise that will transform the way users engage with translation and review tasks.
Edit where it matters – in context
For the first time, translators and subject-matter experts – from doctors and lawyers to engineers – can work directly in context, using a Word-style editing interface that feels instantly familiar. Whether you're reviewing AI-generated content or refining critical translations, In-Layout mode helps you stay focused on the content – not the tool.
Seamless, flexible, familiar
Getting started is simple. Project managers can enable In-Layout mode (currently available for Word files) in the workflow settings for all linguistic task types – including translation, linguistic review, customer review, and more. Once enabled, tasks launch directly into the new mode and users can easily switch back to the classic layout at any time - making it ideal for teams with mixed preferences.
To begin editing, users simply click on a segment to open a small inline-editor, where both source and target text are visible. With a clean and intuitive interface, onboarding and training time is minimal. And because it retains the full power of the Online Editor – including lookups, comments, and tracked changes – your team can collaborate effectively, regardless of their linguistic background.
The new in-layout editing mode, available in the online editorOne editor. Three modes. Total control.
In-Layout editing mode is introduced in addition to the recently released Simplified editing mode, and both sit alongside the long-standing Standard editing mode – the full-featured, traditional CAT tool layout trusted by professional linguists. Nothing is being taken away – we're simply giving you more flexible ways to work.
Each mode is designed to support different users, content types, and stages of the localization process:
- Standard editing mode offers the most comprehensive environment, ideal for linguists handling complex translation tasks that require full access to QA checks, segment filtering, translation memory management, and more.
- Simplified editing mode provides a clean, distraction-free interface – perfect for quick reviews or when working with straightforward content. It’s especially useful for subject-matter experts or in-country reviewers who may find the full translation toolkit overwhelming or difficult to navigate.
- In-Layout editing mode brings content to life in its final format (currently available for Word files), making it ideal for reviewing design-heavy documents, refining AI-generated content, or ensuring that translations fit naturally within the layout. It combines visual context with the full power of the Online Editor, including tracked changes, terminology lookups, and commenting. It’s also extremely useful for subject matter experts or in-country reviewers who don’t want or need access to all translation features.
All three modes are built on the same Online Editor technology, so users benefit from a consistent experience.
Get started with In-Layout editing today
In-Layout editing offers a more natural and efficient way to translate and review content - whether you're a translator who thrives on real-time context, a subject-matter expert reviewing technical material, or an in-country reviewer refining AI-generated translations. It’s also a great fit for experienced professionals with deep domain knowledge - such as former industry specialists - who may not be familiar with traditional CAT tools but can still contribute high-value translations in niche areas. By combining visual context with a simplified, intuitive interface, In-Layout editing makes it easier for a broader range of contributors to deliver accurate, high-quality translations at every stage of the localization process.
