To celebrate the launch of the new website, I’ve organised a competition. I want to hear from you, our users, about what new apps you’d like to see on the SDL AppStore. And there is a chance to win €500 and have your idea developed into a real app.
I want to know what you as a translator, project manager, reviewer…whatever your profession in the translation industry, would like to see as a new downloadable feature in any of our translation products. Although our Software Development Kit and APIs are open for anyone to work with to create apps, understandably most users don’t possess the development skills or resources to do so. Therefore this competition is a great opportunity to make your app idea you wished someone else would develop a reality!
How to enter
To enter, all you need to do is visit our competition page and fill in the entry form with the description of your app idea before the deadline on June 30th. You can go into as much detail as you like, as long as you include enough information for us to get the gist of what your app would do. We’ll get in touch soon after by email so just make sure you leave your correct contact details.
How the winner is picked
Just after the entry deadline, a panel of judges made up of SDL employees in marketing and app development will decide which entries have the potential to be made into applications. The chosen entries will then go up in an online poll hosted on the SDL Community, where the public will vote for a winner. Anyone can vote as long as you have an SDL Account. The poll starts on July 4th and ends on July 31st.
If you’re wondering what our judging criteria will be, we simply want to see original, beneficial yet achievable ideas. If you think your idea may be too over the top however, it may be worth entering anyway and you can always enter again. There’s no limit to how many app ideas you enter so fire away!
The voting stage
Once the online poll is up on the SDL Community, there’s another chance to win a prize. All you need to do is vote for one of the app idea entries and you’ll be submitted into our prize draw where two voters picked at random will win a Samsung Galaxy tablet. After the end of the poll (July 31st), the app idea with the most votes will win €500 and get their ideal app developed by SDL developers.
SDL AppStore – What are apps?
In case anyone reading isn’t aware, if you own an SDL Trados Studio or SDL Passolo licence then you have the ability to download applications from the SDL AppStore. Similarly to how you can download apps to add new features to your phone, you can download all sorts of different extra functionality to customize the way you translate and work in Studio, and the vast majority of them are free.
There are apps to let you work with more file types, improve verification and quality assurance, different machine translation and terminology providers as well as many new features that can help you be more productive. They can either work outside of Studio as stand-alone apps or as plug-ins within Studio’s interface. For more information, visit SDL AppStore’s about and resources pages.
