Acronyms, synonyms, jargon, abbreviations and industry, service and product naming are all examples for terms.

Terms are stored in a termbase. A termbase is multi-lingual. It is a database which includes the term, translations and associated metadata, such as a description or definition, the rules for usage or formatting.

What is the difference between a dictionary, a translation memory and a termbase?

  • A dictionary stores words with a definition – a termbase stores words with translations, descriptions and usage rules
  • A translation memory stores translations of segments of a document – a termbase stores translations of words and phrases to be used in a document
