What is your favorite feature in SDL Trados Studio 2019?
If I had to choose one, I would definitely say that the ability to use plug-in extensions with the SDL AppStore is my favorite feature. While SDL Trados Studio is a highly advanced computer-assisted translation (CAT) tool on its own, the AppStore enables translators to add additional features that can cater to their own unique requirements beyond Studio’s functionality.
Are you a post-editor looking to compare machine translation engine providers to find which one you will get the most leverage from for each of your projects? There’s an app for that: MT Comparison
Would you like to create all of your invoices and quotes for your translation projects within Studio? There’s an app for that: BaccS – invoices and quotes
Are you having issues with a SDLTM file? If you can’t open, export or do anything with an SDLTM, there’s an app for that: SDLTM Repair
Above are just three examples of how the SDL AppStore is the key to unlocking additional functionality within SDL Trados Studio. I could list many more solutions that the apps on the AppStore provide and I would definitely recommend if you’re looking for an extension to the functionality or an easy-solution to a problem on SDL Trados Studio, it’s well worth your time checking out the SDL AppStore.
What excites you about the translation industry in 2018? What trends do you see emerging?
Having worked at SDL since July 2017, it was a great learning experience for me to see the transition from SDL Trados Studio 2017 to 2019. One trend I see emerging, which is rightfully at the heart of Studio 2019, is the placement of user experience as the focus of the product.
With all of the learning materials now accessible within Studio, there is now a helping hand available for translators who are taking their first steps toward using translation technology. Also, the new “Tell Me" feature enables Trados users like myself, who aren’t fully confident in navigating through the layout and ribbons to find all of the extensive features available, the ability to find everything with a simple search. I suppose you still need to know what you’re looking for and how to use the feature, however removing the need to specifically find the feature in Studio’s layout, the barriers to learning and fully embracing CAT tools have been greatly decreased for new users to start translating more efficiently and consistently.
From your experience, what would be your best bit of advice for translators?
During my time working for SDL, I have attended numerous translation industry events across Europe and have seen how networking at these events definitely benefits translators. There is also great opportunities to learn new skills, keep on top of the latest industry trends and speak with technology providers. I’d definitely recommend attending more than one translation and localization event in 2019.
During your time at SDL, what is the most common myth that you’ve come across?
“Do I have to pay for the apps on the SDL AppStore?"
Every month, I assist Ed Flower running the Beginner’s guide to SDL Trados Studio 2019 – Part 1 webinar. The most common myth I encounter is during the questions and answers segment at the end of the webinar. Almost every session we will receive a few queries regarding the price of apps available on the AppStore.
Currently on the AppStore, over 75% of the apps available are free. All apps developed by the SDL Community Developer team are completely free. The reason why some apps have a cost attached to them is due to their development being conducted by a third party who may seek reparations for their time spent developing the app.
If you are only interested in the free apps available, you can simply filter out the paid apps when on the AppStore to ensure only the free functionality extensions are presented to you.

Away from the world of translation, what do you do for fun?
In my free time, I like to travel and experience different cultures. I particularly enjoy discovering the local music and cuisine everywhere I go. While I have my feet on the ground back in the UK, I enjoy exploring around London and finding areas where niche fashion sub-cultures are alive and well.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself
I am bilingual in both French and English, however, I have lived in the UK for the majority of my life and therefore more comfortable speaking in English.
If you are lucky enough to watch me demo SDL Trados Studio, whether that be at an industry event or an SDL webinar, you will most likely see me translate a document from French to English.
