Meet Daniel Lifton, Social Media Marketing Executive

Meet some of our staff from SDL’s many office locations around the world and pick up some top tips along the way.

A little bit about you…

What is your name?

Daniel Lifton

What is your job role?

I am the Social Media Marketing Executive for Translation Productivity, so if you have spoken with us via one of our SDL Trados accounts, you most likely would’ve interacted with me. My role involves producing and managing our social media and blog content throughout the year.

Which SDL office do you work in?

I work at our Head Office in Maidenhead.

How long have you worked at SDL?

This October I would’ve been working at SDL for two years, how time flies.

Let’s talk about SDL and the translation industry…

What is your favorite feature in an SDL translation productivity product?

Whilst I do not work with our products on a daily basis, I do love the ability to connect SDL Trados Studio with Language Cloud to integrate machine translation and build custom engines, which are tailored to you.

What excites you about the translation industry in 2016?

I am going to be a little bit selfish here and say the release of SDL Trados Studio 2017. The upcoming version has a lot of cool features such as AdaptiveMT, which is a self-learning machine translation engine. As you post-edit, the MT engine will learn from you, building an MT output which is unique to you. This is something I feel is really exciting. I believe adaptive machine translation will become the big talking point when it comes to technology in our industry in 2016 and as we move into 2017.

From your experience, what would be your best bit of advice for translators?

As a marketer, I would say make sure you have strong online presence. Build up your social media profiles, start a blog about your translation specialism(s) and write about trends you see in the industry. To be found, you have to put yourself out there.

I’ve written about these two subjects previously:

During your time at SDL, what is the most common myth that you’ve come across?

That we do not offer much help and support. When I first started at SDL I heard this a lot and during my two years here, I can’t understand why. We have many options available such as:

SDL Customer Gateway
SDL Live Chat
• Social Media Channels / YouTube Videos
SDL Community
Monthly webinars

And much more

Tell us about your interests and hobbies…

Away from the world of translation, what do you do for fun?

I regularly play football and I am a huge Chelsea fan. I have an unhealthy knowledge about football, sometimes my friends can’t believe the random facts or stats I remember.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself

I am a twin but proud to say I am a whole minute older!

Where can we find you online?

You can find me on Twitter – @SDL_Dan and on LinkedIn
